What Is Wrong With Fakku

: Study ... (II)

In the previous post talked about how to study these lands do not pay in Italian. Shortly after publication, a friend wanted to discuss with me on the messenger. The conversation was quite interesting, at least from my point of view, and in my opinion complements very well what I posted above. My friend gave me permission to use the conversation and this is, of course keep your name anonymous.

" A: I read your blog ...
A 1 : the best is that many people telling me to go to Italy
A : lol
K-2: good pean you have less than I
K-2: at least you're Italian
A : sip, but I have title ... a nice piece of paper ...
A : with which they are cleaned
nargan K-2: yes
K-2: I would play
validate K-2, or enter into any company where this does not matter much
A : J 2 step and a lot of work ... : S
K-2 oh yeah
A: But look something perhaps not interpreting the blog
A : the title if it gives you the tools to understand things more quickly
K-2 : maybe what I wrote bad
A , but the training that gives the university, especially at ing, lic
K-2: is what I meant, I remember that I put some quotes directly from other people
A : is bestial
A : More than that "power" that you mentioned, I believe, from experience I have lived, that vision is more powerful
A: I guess a PHD will expand even further, but I can not talk about it ... because I'm just Mr.
K-2: on the contrary, the doctorate is helping you to focus on even narrower field
A: I've worked with TSU workers and I can tell ... even when you get to management level, you realize that the tools are not enough college
A: You need more, and that more, I fear, is called graduate
A: Do not understand me, not the vision a problem or area Specific ... is the vision of work and your position in it and how you decide ...
K-2: I understand
K-2, but not everyone gets to see that
A : yeap, and if as you say the people who run companies have that head Cave ... rest only whish it to them ... good luck
K-2: believe me that is
K-2: part of the Italian crisis has its origin in this
A: Look, it's simple, if you do not have advanced degrees, and raised as say ... not see the need for an engineer or a licensed
A : rather, I do know when I need a TSU, an engineer ... and even ratings and level of experience you must have to play a role
A : in some cases, I can hire someone who knows more than I do in a specific area ... my department and improving ... and my knowledge too:)
A : in short, "

Anyway, the conversation seemed interesting and I have transcribed as such.

In Italy, the study does not pay ... Back

In my previous post talked briefly about the divorce between the university and the Italian industry. That divorce is not only limited to those who made life in the universities for a long time doing graduate studies or work as researchers, but also includes those who have bothered to burn the eyelashes. In other words, going straight to the point, a university degree in Italy does not pay. It's that simple. This information, known as a popular culture level was confirmed by daily La Repubblica last 09/05 under the title " graduates gain only 120 euros more per month " (my translation). In this paper we report the results of a study carried out by Unioncamere 1 it is shown that college graduates earn only 120 euros more than those without college degrees. Of course, talk of salary before taxes, the difference should be even lower when we consider all the aliquots that are deducted workers. The juice of the article is summarized in the following quote from the president of the organization:

"Leveling down ,...,' is the most obvious symptom of the lack of attention to the merit that characterizes the Italian labor market and signals a country inattentive to the value of study and skills, who risk mortify the best resources which may have to restart. "

In other words, consider a university in Italy can mean you're wasting your time miserably. This indicates why the fall of called "made in Italy" : a force not seen or recognized professional productive merit. In general, what counts are the contacts (any similarity with other countries is purely coincidental) and no skills.

worst thing is that this disease was already recognized by the Prodi government in its program of government in 2006. And that was even talk of implementing corrective measures. It is not just a matter of governmental action, is also something to change the mentality of the people, understand that a college graduate can make more than a person who has just graduated from high school. The sad thing is that the Italian population shares much of this bias, as evidenced by the following quotes, taken from the free newspaper City of 12/05, on the argument:

  • "In Italy there is no meritocracy, university degrees are considered the only pieces of paper. Move only the living and the recommended ". Aly84 (Ergo, why so many problems in Italy).

  • " I think there is [something] so outrageous. University degrees are currently only single sheets of paper. The work is another thing. "Alex (I wonder if this guy would like their children to try a doctor without that piece of paper).

  • " depends on the type now most of the work on the computer are repetitive and anyone can make. "Lucy66 (that explains why I can not buy a single book when the store system down).

  • " I am a graduate university, but I know colleagues che can not do 'O' with a glass. It is the experience that makes a difference. "Veleno (true, but to have experience doing certain tasks, is not as logical to have a theoretical background that allows you to quickly understand?).

  • " The degree is important personal pride and culture. Be called Doctor: wow!. But in the end the real title should be obtained in life. "Marianna Mod (excellent, banality above all how cute is the" Dr "before my name. Personally enough for me to tell me sir. For Furthermore, the title you get in life is to late).

  • "It's not a question of merit or qualifications, but of knowledge. Sometimes a diploma [high school] is the best cost-benefit commitment." Liberal76 (true, not everyone was born to be a doctor, but for certain work not only experience counts.)

  • "Unfortunately the educational degree is a piece of paper made with fatigue. What really counts is the experience that is done at the time." Sergio (but without that piece of paper can not gain experience) "

You see, many people view the university titles simple pieces of paper, and the most important thing is experience. It is true that the latter is important, as an experienced worker can tell you precisely where you find a problem but depending on the level of education of the worker, he may decide the best solution to this problem. Everything is at the level of competition. And as I said, everyone expects that the doctor treating him have very good academic qualifications, and that goes for all professions.

But worth remembering this story of the father of a friend about the Veneto industries: many of the textiles industries were founded by people who worked for a long time as workers in other companies, they knew which machines to buy and what to do, and how make a quality product. While Italy was the market leader, was enough to copy what others did to stay. When he entered the competition from emerging economies (see China), many not having the ability to innovate or produce at low costs had to close or move to other countries. The companies that survived were those who had the vision to change and evolve, and they realized that as they increased the complexity of the market, it was necessary to hire more and more trained staff.

. Uninominal

After several months writing and editing, my dissertation is ready, and I just need to defend next week. Within a few days I will add the title of doctor of my business cards, or I may be properly called Dr. K-2;) (I have the right to be a little vain). Despite the effort made, I'm not entirely satisfied with the results, both personally and in terms of research. But at least I finished. I hope to publish my results in the coming months and into something tangible to justify three years and not feel that I'm doing something in the end did not bring me satisfaction.

During this period when the blog has been totally abandoned, I've been looking for work in Italy and surrounding parts. What I discovered is that my CV is not like a lot, despite being a chemistry graduate with a master's and now a PhD. I found that some companies consider me overqualified, while others despise the degrees offered the same wage as is offered to a graduate. In other words, to go find work I'm competing with shaman who could be supervised during their thesis. Excellent.

Another thing I discovered is that although Italy is a country suffering chronic old age, a person with 31 years and three titles under his arm is considered too old to start working. If this is added I am extra, well, uphill battle my stay in this country.

The worst is not only that, how difficult it is to get employment, but the attitude that industry has regarding the job at the university puts a beautiful INRI wanting to leave the academic world as people in the industry who I have spoken at college working at tortoise speed or not work at all. Incidentally, my wife and I were over here echándonos air in the face for three years ... This in part may help explain divorce between the Italian industry and academia, and why there is so little scientific research in Italy funded by industry. But of this I shall speak in a future post.

Moreover, during this time have passed so many things: protests in Tibet, Berlusconi returned to power, Chavez threatening Colombia with war and many other things that make life not boring. These events occurred a very interesting (at least for me): after one year and one month got to renew my residence permit (permesso di soggiorno ), which already gave me up. This is clearly made to remind general uselessness and incompetence of the Italian bureaucracy and as they strive to treat you as second-class citizen. Of course, I had no need to re-apply for renewal of the said permit and make a series of items which are difficult to fill me the scholarship because we ended in March (01/03, not 31/03) and now we live (my wife and I) of our savings. Fortunately, the high command is doing an internship and part of the money that we spent to recover his salary. The rest will follow as stubs clean laundry.

Meanwhile, I keep looking for work, not only in Italy and if not give me anything soon, I will play a return to the motherland in June. And thanks to the huge brain drain caused by the revolution pretty (thanks to Facebook I've heard that about half of my former high school mates and many well-known college now living abroad), I think I can get work without further hindrance. Of course, I would stay long enough to prepare to leave the country they may find greener pastures. We will see, the important thing now is to defend next week.

Finally, I shall just say that I'm back on these conflicts bloggers.

PS: I added a Twitter widget, with the information you put briefly when on-line and boring.
PD2: If any of my few readers are interested in speaking with me, including widgets that owns this blog is a right-hand side, called plugoo: he can chat freely with me when you see that I'm online.
