After several months writing and editing, my dissertation is ready, and I just need to defend next week. Within a few days I will add the title of doctor of my business cards, or I may be properly called Dr. K-2;) (I have the right to be a little vain). Despite the effort made, I'm not entirely satisfied with the results, both personally and in terms of research. But at least I finished. I hope to publish my results in the coming months and into something tangible to justify three years and not feel that I'm doing something in the end did not bring me satisfaction.
During this period when the blog has been totally abandoned, I've been looking for work in Italy and surrounding parts. What I discovered is that my CV is not like a lot, despite being a chemistry graduate with a master's and now a PhD. I found that some companies consider me overqualified, while others despise the degrees offered the same wage as is offered to a graduate. In other words, to go find work I'm competing with shaman who could be supervised during their thesis. Excellent.
Another thing I discovered is that although Italy is a country suffering chronic old age, a person with 31 years and three titles under his arm is considered too old to start working. If this is added I am extra, well, uphill battle my stay in this country.
The worst is not only that, how difficult it is to get employment, but the attitude that industry has regarding the job at the university puts a beautiful INRI wanting to leave the academic world as people in the industry who I have spoken at college working at tortoise speed or not work at all. Incidentally, my wife and I were over here echándonos air in the face for three years ... This in part may help explain divorce between the Italian industry and academia, and why there is so little scientific research in Italy funded by industry. But of this I shall speak in a future post.
Moreover, during this time have passed so many things: protests in Tibet, Berlusconi returned to power, Chavez threatening Colombia with war and many other things that make life not boring. These events occurred a very interesting (at least for me): after one year and one month got to renew my residence permit (permesso di soggiorno ), which already gave me up. This is clearly made to remind general uselessness and incompetence of the Italian bureaucracy and as they strive to treat you as second-class citizen. Of course, I had no need to re-apply for renewal of the said permit and make a series of items which are difficult to fill me the scholarship because we ended in March (01/03, not 31/03) and now we live (my wife and I) of our savings. Fortunately, the high command is doing an internship and part of the money that we spent to recover his salary. The rest will follow as stubs clean laundry.
Meanwhile, I keep looking for work, not only in Italy and if not give me anything soon, I will play a return to the motherland in June. And thanks to the huge brain drain caused by the revolution pretty (thanks to Facebook I've heard that about half of my former high school mates and many well-known college now living abroad), I think I can get work without further hindrance. Of course, I would stay long enough to prepare to leave the country they may find greener pastures. We will see, the important thing now is to defend next week.
Finally, I shall just say that I'm back on these conflicts bloggers.
PS: I added a Twitter widget, with the information you put briefly when on-line and boring.
PD2: If any of my few readers are interested in speaking with me, including widgets that owns this blog is a right-hand side, called plugoo: he can chat freely with me when you see that I'm online.
