The Fall ...

a couple of weeks ago the Prodi government fell, to be exact on January 24. Why does it fall? Well, for put in the words of the actress / comedian Luciana 1 Littizzetto:
"(This) is the only government falls because a minister does not feel sufficiently loved by his colleagues." (Video original, in Italian: here and here )

This phrase is that between 16 and 17 January, a judge of the Campania region (Naples region) placed under house arrest with his wife, brothers, father and other relatives by influence peddling. This made that the parliamentarians of all political persuasions will give their sympathy to the Minister 2 , of \u200b\u200bcourse it shows the enormous tail of straw have Italian parliamentarians (more details here ).

On Thursday 16 January, Mastella, after the expressions of solidarity made by his parliamentary colleagues, demanded the government an official statement of solidarity with him for Monday 21 January, otherwise he and his political party (UDEUR) withdraw from the government, he collapsed. The reason: because, he felt persecuted by the judiciary, not because he was a criminal (see note 2) but for their political beliefs. Yes, the man is a cad.

But if you think about it calmly, why an entire political party offers solidarity immediately to one of its members, however important it may be?, why force the other parties within the ruling coalition to support it because?. It's simple, your whole family is a member of UDEUR. Toda. All accused persons who are not only relatives of the minister, but they are important members of the leadership of UDEUR. Solidarity doubly (more info here )

Obviously, the coalition did not yield to this because one thing is unofficial support, and quite another to do so through a motion. Unfortunately, Mr. Mastella is of those who make offers that can not be rejected, and this is demonstrated by the mass resignation of all MPs (except one), causing the fall of Prodi.

Most impressive is that many political commentators, this has been taken by surprise, since the UDEUR is a centrist party, is left as governed by the left and right when he rules on the right. Many expected that the parties of the "radical left" (those who have not realized that the Berlin Wall fell), a few critical market reforms made by this government (many more than those carried out by Berlusconi's liberal ) and any initiative that would involve reducing the size of the state. The fact is that throughout this government, Mr. Mastella has threatened several times to leave if you did not follow his orders ideas.

The consequences of the fall of the Prodi government is simple: not going to happen. The same politicians who have been ruling the country for several years continued to rule. The novelty is that it is not known if there will be early elections or form a transitional government to draft a new electoral law 3. Berlusconi wants people to go vote immediately, believing that you get the benefits of the current electoral law, despite the avocado to the reform of the law, saying it was urgent. On the other hand, we have the president of the republic (and, in lower case) Giorgio Napolitano, calling for a transitional government, led by Senate President Marini, with the task of carrying out such reform.

Finally, there will be changes, the government will move to the right, but the faces will always remain the same. In short, nothing new under the sun.

PS: most of the links in this post, go to the English edition of the blog of Beppe Grillo, a comedian and cyberactivism Genoa. If you read carefully, you will find a very good picture of what Italian politics.

1 I make the difference between comic and humorist: the first is what makes you laugh, while the second is what makes you laugh thinking (based on the definition of Laureano Márquez).

2 Mastella is under investigation by the Italian Office for embezzlement and the disappearance of some European funds. This individual also asserted his power as minister of justice to: 1) discredit the magistrate conducting inquiries into the case, and 2) change and warn the judge. I recommend googling "de Magistris," why not ", Mastella. Find all the relevant information, hopefully in English. A good summary (English) can this blog post Beppe Grillo: TNT? Why not? .

3 Almost two years in office and could not reform the current law. Now the question is why do we have to reform the Italian electoral law?, Simple, the current electoral law, parties select candidates, but no, that is, they vote for color allowing the nomenclature of these parties is to decide who the members of parliament, not the citizen.
The other point of the electoral law is that the winning coalition gets a prize of governance, that is, if you do not have the votes needed to reach a qualified majority, but say the 50.000000001%, the winning coalition will Members awarded the need to form a government.

Italy, policy, Prodi Government
